Producing sound music history:
Rethinking current research on recordings

Recent years have witnessed an increased interest in historical recordings, as exemplified by the London CHARM-project and the Berlin initiative, Historische und experimentelle Interpretationsforschung. This presentation will offer a critical assessment of the research principles behind these projects, discuss the relation between research questions and technological possibilities, and try to develop alternative ways for using recordings in an effort to develop a music history of sound.

Jeroen van Gessel studied organ at Utrecht Conservatory and musicology at Utrecht University, where in 2001 he obtained his Ph.D with a dissertation on the composition contests of the Dutch Society for the Promotion of Music. He is currently completing a monograph, Die Praxis der Oper, am Beispiel des Straßburger Stadttheaters (1886-1944), and teaches musicology at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.
